LUFC Poyet - I would love to go back to Leeds

Former Leeds United Assistant Manager Gus Poyet says he would one day love to come back to Leeds as manager.

Poyet was assistant to Dennis Wise at Elland Road between October 2006 and October 2007 before leaving to take up a role at Tottenham Hotspur as first team coach to Juande Ramos. He lost his job at White Hart Lane a year later when Juande Ramos was sacked at Tottenham manager.

The former Uruguayan international got his first managerial post when he took over at struggling League One side Brighton and Hove Albion in November 2009.

In his first full season with the south coast club, he led them to the League One title and they have established themselves as promotion candidates in the championship.

Poyet is preparing for a game against Arsenal this weekend with the Gunners boss Arsene Wenger under pressure. Arsenal are struggling to finish in the top four this season and are currently seven points off the fourth Champions League place and Poyet sees no reason why he couldn`t be considered for the post in the future despite his past with the North London clubs London rivals.

Poyet spent four years at London rivals Chelsea and three years at their bitter rivals Tottenham Hotspur as a players and Poyet says it should not stand in his way, having been accepted at Leeds despite the bitter rivalry between Leeds and Chelsea in the past.

Speaking in the London Evening Standard , Poyet said, 'I want to manage at the highest level and would love to manage Chelsea or Arsenal. Why not?

'Does my Chelsea or Tottenham past mean I cannot be Arsenal manager? Look, I've been at Leeds [as assistant to Dennis Wise] and the relationship between Leeds and Chelsea was not the best.

'If you ask any Leeds fan, my relationship with them was absolutely exceptional.

'I would love to go back to Leeds because they know how much I care for the club and how much I will give the club. Same with Arsenal. The only thing is I need to be ready.'

In his year at Elland Road, Poyet could not help Dennis Wise mastermind Leeds escape from relegation from the championship as they ended the season in administration.

Despite Leeds being docked fifteen points at the start of the 2007/08 season, Wise and Poyet masterminded Leeds fantastic start to the season that saw them win their first seven games and remain unbeaten before Poyet left to take the post at Tottenham towards the end of October, with Leeds having picked up 32 points from a possible 36.

Following Poyet`s departure, Leeds won just eight of their next twenty games, including embarrassing cup defeats to Hereford United and Bury, before Dennis Wise left his post to take up a role at Newcastle United.

Poyet has a win ratio of 44% during his time at Brighton having won 77 of the 172 games in charge.

He has twice been amongst the favourites to take over the post as Leeds manager following the sackings of Gary McAllister and Simon Grayson.
