Leeds United boss Neil Warnock was really pleased for Luke Varney after what he called an outstanding performance against Southampton.
Varney was given the opportunity to play up front and he led the line well, managing to put a glaring miss behind him in the opening fifteen minutes.
He somehow managed to miss from one yard out with the goal at his mercy and it is sure to feature on a 'football gaffs` DVD this Christmas.
The miss could have affected many players low on confidence but he managed to put the miss behind him and despite failing to score, he was a constant threat for Leeds.
"I thought Luke Varney was excellent, despite the 'miss of the century`, he didn`t let his head go down and I thought he was outstanding and because of that he brought Diouf more into the game," Warnock told LUTV.
Varney played his part in the first goal when his run and cross down the left eventually fell to Michael Tonge, who made no mistake.
Warnock said he gave them a different option to recent weeks and he even managed to put a sickness bug behind him to earn a standing ovation from the Leeds faithful when he was substituted late on.
Warnock continued "He hasn`t been very well. He has had a sickness bug and he was struggling at half time. I asked him to try to give me twenty minutes and he gave me nearly forty minutes, so I thought he was outstanding and that is how I have seen him play in the past.
"He gave us options down the channels that we haven`t had. Luciano hasn`t been himself a lately and we just needed something different and he gave us that, so I am pleased for Luke."
Warnock will now face a selection dilemma ahead of the game against Brighton and Hove Albion on Friday night, whether to stick with Varney in attack or bring back Luciano Becchio.
Becchio replaced Varney in the closing minutes and he netted his tenth goal of the season from the penalty spot.
The Argentinian striker has looked out of form in recent games, his strike against Southampton was his first in four games, and he hasn`t scored in open play since his strike against Nottingham Forest, nine games ago.
