LUFC Leeds v Southampton - Over The Years

Vital Leeds looks at the head-to-head record between Leeds United and Southampton over the years at Elland Road.

The two sides have met on 45 occasions at Elland Road with Leeds winning 25, Southampton 7 and 13 have been drawn.

The first ever meeting between the two came during the 1922/23 season when a solitary goal from Joe Harris won the game for Leeds.

Southampton had to wait until their sixth visit to Elland Road to score their first goal when the sides drew 1-1.

Scoring at Elland Road has been a problem for Southampton, they have failed to score on 23 of their 45 visits to Leeds and they have scored in just 5 of their last 15 visits.

It wasn`t until their 15th visit to Elland Road that Southampton returned to the South Coast with maximum points when they won 1-0 during the 1966/67 season.

Whenever a Leeds v Southampton fixture comes around it always gets people talking about the fixture at Elland Road in 1972, when Leeds destroyed the side from the South Coast 7-0 and one passage of play saw them keep the ball for around 30 passes.

The game was shown as highlights on Match of the Day with commentator Barry Davies commenting during the passing 'To say Leeds United are playing with Southampton is the understatement of the season. Poor Southampton just don`t know what day it is. It is almost cruel.`

Leeds goals that day came from Peter Lorimer (3), Allan Clarke (2), Jack Charlton and Mick Jones.

They have only met once previously in the competition at the semi-final stage in the 1978/79 season.

The first leg at Elland Road finished 2-2 with Ray Hankin and Tony Currie on target for Leeds. Southampton won the return leg 1-0 to progress to the final where they lost to Nottingham Forest.

The two sides met in the championship last season and Southampton somehow left with all three points thanks to a Ricky Lambert goal.

Leeds laid siege to the Southampton goal for long periods of the game but an inspired Kelvin Davis in the Southampton goal somehow kept Leeds out.
