LUFC Austin Celebrates 50th Appearance With Win

Rodolph Austin celebrated his 50th international appearance for Jamaica by helping them into the final round of qualifying for the 2014 World Cup finals.

Austin played just thirteen minutes in their defeat to Guatemala last Friday after struggling with an ankle injury he had picked up for Leeds in their win over Barnsley the previous weekend.

The influential midfielder was back in the starting line-up for their final group game with Antigua and Barbuda and he helped them to a 4-1 win.

Jamaica went into the game three points behind USA and Guatemala who met in Kansas City, also last night.

A draw in Kansas would have eliminated Jamaica but there was no sign of the two countries happy to settle for a point each as USA won 3-1 with Tottenham Hotspur striker Clint Dempsey scoring twice.

Jamaica never looked in danger of losing after scoring twice in two minutes inside the opening twenty minutes. Demar Phillips and Watford defender Nyron Nosworthy were on target for Jamaica.

Antigua did pull a goal back just past the hour but two more goals from Vancouver Whitecaps MLS striker Dane Richards secured the 4-1 win

Jamaica now go into the final round of qualifying for the North and Central America and Caribbean region next year.

Six teams will now play for three automatic places in the finals in Brazil with the fourth placed side facing a play-off against the winners from the Oceanic region.
