LUFC Sheffield Wednesday v Leeds Over The Years

Vital Leeds United looks back at the head-to-head record with Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough over the years.

The two sides have met on 42 occasions at Hillsborough with Wednesday winning 20, Leeds 13 and 9 draws.

The first ever meeting came in the 1920/21 season when, The Wednesday as they were originally known won 2-1.

Leeds failed to win on any of their first six visits and it wasn`t until the 1929/30 season, their first as Sheffield Wednesday, that Leeds won with a 2-1 win.
Goals have never been a problem between the two sides with an average of three per game.

There has only ever been three goalless draws and they all came in the space of four seasons in the late 1960`s.

Leeds enjoyed their biggest win during the 1991/92 championship-winning season.

The two sides met at Hillsborough in January 1992 with both sides occupying places in the top three in the division.

In a game screened live by ITV, Leeds swept past their Yorkshire neighbours thanks to a Lee Chapman hat-trick as well as goals from Tony Dorigo, Rod Wallace and Mike Whitlow.

Former Leeds favourite John Sheridan replied for the home side, when he scored at the second attempt after seeing his spot kick saved by John Lukic.

Wednesday gained revenge less than four years later when they recorded their biggest win, beating Leeds 6-2.

Marc Degryse (2), David Hirst (2), Guy Whittingham and Mark Bright were all on target for the home side. Tomas Brolin scored his first goal for the club and Rod Wallace replied for Leeds in what was manager Howard Wilkinson`s heaviest defeat during his time at the club.

The last competitive meeting between the two was in 2006/07 season when Leeds won 1-0 thanks to a David Healy penalty.

They did meet in pre-season in the summer of 2011. Former Leeds midfielder David Prutton fired Wednesday ahead early in the game before a late Max Gradel penalty salvaged a draw for Leeds.
