'If It's Football, It's Vital'

LUFC Pearce - That is why I play the game

Leeds United defender Jason Pearce says that is what he plays football for after helping Leeds knock out Premier League side Everton out of the Capital One League Cup.

Pearce was captain for the night with regular captain Lee Peltier out through injury and he led by example at the heart of the Leeds defence.

The summer signing from Portsmouth helped keep the inform Victor Anichebe and Marouane Fellaini quiet as Leeds won 2-1 to progress to the fourth round.

Speaking on Sky Sports after the game, Pearce said nights like this are why he plays the game. "I loved it, that is what we play football for, to play against these sorts of players and these sorts of teams. It was a great team performance."

Pearce was in the thick of the action throughout. He finished the game with a heavily bandaged head after a clash of heads with Steven Naismith left him requiring eight stitches.

Late in the game, he again put his body on the line when he deflected a Fellaini shot wide with the Everton players screaming for a penalty.

The Everton players were again screaming for a penalty minutes later when he tussled with Anichebe in the penalty area.

In a tough night for the Leeds defence, fellow defender Tom Lees also finished the game with a bandaged head after a cut to his eye in a clash with Anichebe.
