LUFC Tonge - No reason why we can't challenge

On loan Leeds United midfielder Michael Tonge believes there is no reason why the club shouldn`t be amongst those challenging for promotion in the championship.

Tonge arrived from Stoke City on a three-month loan deal earlier this month and he helped the side to their first win in four games with the home win over Nottingham Forest at the weekend.

The 29 year old is vastly experienced in the championship, he has helped current manager Neil Warnock to promotion from the division before, and he says there is no reason why this side cannot do the same. Speaking on Yorkshire Radio, Tonge said, "I think we have a good group of players who have the ability.

"I don`t think anyone will relish coming to Elland Road this season to play against us. The championship is so unpredictable. If we could put a run of results together, there is no reason why we cannot be at the top end of the table."

Tonge is available for Leeds cup-tie with Everton on Tuesday night and he is looking forward to the occasion. "I think everyone has just got to look forward to it. It is a tough game because they have started the season really well. We know it is going to be difficult, we are underdogs and we have nothing to lose and if we can perform like we did against Forest, there is no reason why we can`t give a good account of ourselves," added Tonge.

The game on Tuesday night sees two clubs who have met many times, going head to head again for the first time since the 2003/04 season.

Leeds have a great record at home against Everton having lost just five of the 57 previous encounters.

Everton have started the season in excellent form and they are currently third in the Premier League, picking up ten points from their opening five games.

On Saturday they won 3-0 at Swansea City and in the second round of this competition they beat Leyton Orient 5-0 at Goodison Park.

If we can keep within touching distance till January and the investment comes in, the right players could mean we make a concerted effort at the right time of the season instead of falling away as in the last couple of seasons
