LUFC White skippers Ireland to famous win in Italy

Leeds United`s Aidan White was named captain of the Republic of Ireland under 21 side as they recorded a famous 4-2 win against group winners Italy in their final European 2013 finals qualifying game.

Ireland`s win was made more remarkable by the fact that they had Derrick Williams sent off after just 37 minutes with the game at 1-1.

Sean Murray had given Ireland the lead halfway through the half only for Luca Caldirola to equalise for Italy..

Williams was sent off for a professional foul that resulted in a penalty to Italy but Ireland goalkeeper Aaron McCarey saved the spot kick.

Two goals in two minutes close to the hour by Aaron Doran and Conor Henderson put Ireland in control and Doran added a fourth with ten minutes remaining as Ireland fell just short of second placed Turkey in the group and a chance of reaching the play offs.

Ireland finished the game with nine men when Anthony Forde was shown two yellow cards in quick succession with just four minutes remaining.

Italy scored a late consolation goal through Stephan El Shaarawy but it couldn`t stop Ireland`s youngsters securing a famous victory.

White completed 90 minutes and in the process won his tenth cap for his country, since making his debut in August last year against Austria.

The Leeds youngster has now represented England at under 19 level and Ireland at under 21 level and he will now be hoping to push himself into the reckoning of Ireland national manager Giovanni Trapattoni.

The full national side started their qualification campaign on Friday, for the 2014 World Cup finals in Brazil, with a 2-1 win in Kazakhstan.
