Snodgrass - I left to improve international career
Former Leeds United captain Robert Snodgrass says his decision to leave Leeds was to enhance his chances of regular football in the Scottish national side.
Snodgrass left Leeds for Premier League side Norwich City in the summer and he scored his first top flight goal in the 1-1 draw at Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend.
The winger has joined up with the Scotland squad ahead of their games with Serbia and Macedonia as Scotland start their World Cup qualifying campaign.
The 24 year old has been a regular in the Scotland squad in the last few seasons at Leeds but he felt he had to move into the spotlight of the Premier League to improve his chances of a regular start in the Scotland squad. Speaking in the Scottish Sun, Snodgrass said, "I said when I left Leeds for Norwich a big part of the move was down to it hopefully improving my international situation.
"That was my own view. I hadn`t spoken to Craig Levein about it or Neil Warnock.
"It was just clear to me if you get the chance to test yourself against the best players it`s a no-brainer.
"There are important games coming up with Scotland so I felt it would be good for the gaffer to see me playing at Premier League level every week."
Leeds boss Neil Warnock had offered Snodgrass a deal to make him the highest paid player at Elland Road but Snodgrass always said that he wanted to see the club show ambition in the transfer market to match his own ambitions of playing in the Premier League. With the on-going saga of the supposed takeover at Elland Road, Snodgrass said he felt that even Warnock did not know what was going on. "Neil tried to sign me on a longer deal at Leeds, but I told him I wasn`t ready because I wanted to play in the Premier League.
"I heard from him once or twice about signing and that was it.
"I think he was a bit more baffled about what was going on in the boardroom — whether it was going to be Ken Bates or new owners in charge.
"I don`t really think he knew 100 per cent what was going on and you can see why now with the indications the takeover`s not happening.
"If he didn`t know what was going on then it was hard for me too," added Snodgrass.
Snodgrass left Elland Road in July after four years with the club in a spell that had seen him make close to 200 appearances.
