Leeds United boss Neil Warnock finally believes he has put a side together this summer that can make them competitive in the championship this season.
Warnock brought in his tenth signing of the summer in Lee Peltier at the weekend and the Leeds boss, one of the most successful in the Football League for gaining promotions with clubs, feels clubs will not enjoy playing against Leeds this season. Speaking in the Yorkshire Post, Warnock said, "It is only in the last 48 hours that I can see that I have a team who I believe will be competitive, home and away.
"We may, in my opinion, still be short of a few goals but we are in a healthy state. Put it this way, I don`t think teams will want to play against us. And that always has to be the starting point.
"Then you have to build on that. The back area has improved this summer, so has the midfield. But now we have to improve our goal threat.
"Ideally, I`d like to get another striker in before Wolves and with Snodgrass having left then I`d like someone who can play wide as well."
Leeds continue to be linked with a whole host of attacking players, with reports today suggesting that Warnock has turned his attention back to West Ham striker Nicky Maynard ahead of Brighton striker Craig Mackail-Smith.
The Leeds boss suggested recently that he was looking for a couple more signings that would be the icing on the cake this summer after a busy close season, which started frustratingly slowly for Warnock.
After promising major surgery to the squad at the end of last season, Warnock released eight players and placed a further six on the transfer list.
Portsmouth defender Jason Pearce was quickly added to the squad but Warnock was then frustrated when he missed out on his Portsmouth teammate Joel Ward who eventually joined Crystal Palace after reports suggested Leeds could not afford the £400,000 asking price up front.
It wasn`t until the end of June that Warnock finally brought in his second and third signings in successive days with Paul Green (Derby County) and Adam Drury (Norwich City) both signing for the club.
The squad returned for pre-season training on July 11th with Leeds still looking far from a squad big enough to make a sustained challenge for promotion and earn Warnock a record-breaking eighth promotion in the Football League.
Since pre-season started, Warnock`s squad has rapidly grown with an influx of new players in the past few weeks. Warnock finally landed his man, when goalkeeper Paddy Kenny joined Warnock for the fourth time in his career from Queens Park Rangers.
On a busy first day on Leeds tour of Devon and Cornwall, Warnock announced the signing of four more new players. Former player Andy Gray signed after a successful trial, Rodolph Austin signed from SK Brann and Portsmouth duo Luke Varney and Jamie Ashdown were all added to the squad.
Last week another Portsmouth man in midfielder David Norris joined the club and he was joined at the weekend by the capture of defender Lee Peltier from Leicester City.
We are now just waiting for the icing on the cake.
