LUFC On this day August 3rd - 15 point deduction

A look back at what happened on August 3rd in recent history at Leeds United.

2007

Leeds are dealt a huge blow that they will have to start their first season in League One on minus fifteen points. Leeds released a statement regarding the penalty and that they were also going to appeal against the deduction of fifteen points.

Leeds United statement in full:

'We are pleased to announce that the board of the Football League Ltd have agreed to transfer the share in the Football League to Leeds United 2007 Ltd. The Football League have transferred the share in 'exceptional circumstances' and have imposed a 15-point penalty for the start of the 2007/08 season. The club have appealed against this sanction. The timescale for the appeal is not yet known.

'The club has received an amount of criticism from supporters for not keeping them up to date with developments during what has been a very difficult time for us all. We appreciate this policy was difficult for fans to accept, but please be assured that this was done in the best interests of Leeds United which is justified by the return of the share.

'We are now planning the appeal and we are able to complete the squad rebuilding for the 2007/08 season, albeit with only one week to go before our first League One game at Tranmere.'

Striker Richard Cresswell completes his move to Stoke City after a move to Hull City collapses.

On a brighter note, Leeds had received a bye in the first round of the Johnstone`s Paint Trophy!

Young midfielder Fabian Delph is on the verge of signing for Aston Villa after the two clubs agreed a fee for the player.

Sanchez Watt returns to Leeds for a second time from Arsenal. Watt ended the last season on loan at Elland Road and this time he joins on a season long loan.

A Leeds XI cruise to a 5-1 win at Wakefield with both Andy Robinson and Davide Somma amongst the goals.

Young defender Liam Darville is having a trial with League One side Tranmere Rovers. The 19 year old had already had a trial with York City earlier in the summer.

Leeds release striker Tresor Kandol from his contract with the club. Kandol joined Leeds from Barnet in 2006 and he played 77 games for the club scoring 16 goals.

On a busy day at Elland Road, goalkeeper Alan Martin joins non-league side Barrow on a six-month loan deal.

2011
The clubs player of the year Max Gradel says he is still waiting to be offered a new deal at Elland Road. Speaking in the Daily Express, Gradel said, 'I can`t sign a deal when there is no deal. I`ve been waiting for a contract but I haven`t been offered a deal yet.
'I`ve said I want to take this club back into the Premier League, but you can`t guarantee what`s going to happen.'

Leeds will have two players missing for the Carling Cup tie with Bradford City in a week`s time. Max Gradel is the latest to be called up by his national side after Robert Snodgrass was called up by Scotland the previous day..
