'If It's Football, It's Vital'

LUFC On this day July 29th

A look back at what happened on July 29th in recent history at Leeds United.

2006

Leeds United returned to winning ways at the City Ground with a hard-earned victory over League One side Nottingham Forest in their latest pre-season friendly..

Strikes from David Healy(3), Eirik Bakke(59) and an own goal from Forest defender Wes Morgan(82) sealed the win for Leeds.

Nathan Tyson equalised just before the break for Forest, and Grant Holt headed the home side ahead on 47 minutes, but on this occasion Leeds were able to fight back to victory.

Nottingham Forest 2 (Tyson 41, Grant Holt 47),
Leeds United 3 (Healy 3, Bakke 59, Morgan og 82)

Nottingham Forest:
Smith, Cullip (Lester 46min), Bennett, Gary Holt, Morgan, Breckin (Thompson 46min), Tyson, Grant Holt (Harris 80min), Clingan (Eaden 67min).

Leeds United: Sullivan (Ward 87min), Kelly, Butler, Lewis (Morris 46min), Harding, Kilgallon (Gregan 46 min), Stone Bayly 70min), Carole, Bakke (Howson 90min), Moore (Backford 60min), Healy (Blake 65min).

2008
Leeds announced a 3-year shirt sponsorship deal with the online flight booking service netflights.com.

2009
Leeds draw their latest pre-season friendly 0-0 at Newcastle United.

Team
Higgs (Ankergren 59), Crowe, Marques, Kisnorbo (Michalik 59), Parker (White 84), Snodgrass (Hughes 59), Delph, Howson (Prutton 71), Johnson (Robinson 70), Beckford, Becchio (Grella 71)

2010
Leeds United chief executive Shaun Harvey was quick to deny rumours that the club would not be offering striker Luciano Becchio a new contract when his current deal runs out.

Becchio joined Leeds in the summer of 2008 after a successful trial with the club and signed a three-year deal that was due to run out at the end of the season.

Speaking on the official website, Harvey said, 'The story is completely untrue. We`re committed to keeping him at Elland Road.' (Becchio signed a new three and a half year deal in December)

New signing Billy Paynter is given the number 9 shirt after arriving from Swindon Town. (Paynter scored just one goal in his first season at Elland Road.)

Robert Snodgrass was to undergo scans on his knee after suffering an injury in Norway.

The midfielder, who had enjoyed a good game, was the victim of a hefty challenge that saw him stretchered from the field and needing to leave the ground on crutches. (He was sidelined until September)

2011
A Leeds United XI were beaten 2-1 at Bradford Park Avenue with Andy Lonergan making his debut in a Leeds shirt.

Transfer listed Mike Grella was also included as well as Hungarian international trialist Boldiszar Bodor.

Despite the defeat, Lonergan made a number of fine saves in the Leeds goal to prevent a heavier defeat.

Leeds went in at half time trailing 2-0. Dominic Poleon pulled a goal back for Leeds in the second half but it was not enough to prevent defeat.

Youngsters Zac Thompson, Nathan, and Lewis Turner who have all featured regularly with the first team during pre-season were also involved.

Team
Lonergan, Thompson, Bodor, L. Turner, N. Turner, McCann, Poleon, Grella, Qualter, Payne, Hatfield
