LUFC Warnock - Gray desperate to play for Leeds

Leeds United boss Neil Warnock says new signing Andy Gray was desperate to re-join the club he started his career with after agreeing a one-year deal with Leeds.

Gray, the son of former Leeds player Frank and nephew of Eddie, started his career at Elland Road, coming through the clubs academy system.

Speaking on Yorkshire Radio, Warnock said, "Right from day one, Andy has wanted to sign a year. He did have one or two options lower down the league. I just think he will give us good cover and there is always a goal in him.

"He was desperate to play for Leeds again and I think the contract we were talking about, he was worth a shout."

Howard Wilkinson gave him his debut in January 1996 and he was a regular in his first half season at Elland Road making 15 appearances. Gray was one of the few shining lights in Leeds dismal Coca-Cola Cup final defeat at the hands of Aston Villa.

The following season he made just eight appearances, with just two of those coming under George Graham who replaced Wilkinson in September.

In the 1997/98 season, he once again failed to break into Graham`s side and he was loaned out to Bury where he made seven appearances.

After just 29 appearances in two and a half seasons for Leeds, Gray joined Nottingham Forest in August 1998.

Gray has never really settled at a club and during his time at Forest, he had loan spells at Preston and Oldham before signing for Bradford City.

His best spell in his career was when he joined Warnock and Jones at Sheffield United in 2004 and he scored 25 goals in 58 league appearances.

Gray`s form at Bramall Lane saw him make a £1 million move to Sunderland in 2005 but he once again struggled, scoring just one goal in 21 Premier League appearances.

He had enjoyed a short loan spell at Burnley towards the end of the 2005/06 season where he netted three times in nine appearances and the Lancashire club signed him in the summer of 2006 in a £750,000 deal.

Gray spent eighteen months at Turf Moor, where he scored 25 goals in 60 championship appearances before moving to Charlton Athletic.

After eighteen months at the Valley, Gray returned to Yorkshire, signing for Barnsley.

Gray netted 21 times in his three seasons at Oakwell before being released at the end of last season.

He looked all set to sign for one of his former clubs Bradford City this summer before joining up with Leeds for pre-season.
