LUFC On this day July 14th - Leeds lose opener

A look back at what has happened at Leeds United on July 14th in recent history.

2007

Bolton Wanderers boss Sammy Lee says Lubomir Michalik will not be joining Leeds. The giant Slovakian defender spent the end of last season on loan at Elland Road. (He signed the following January)

2010
Leeds lose their opening game of their two game tour of Slovakia in their opening pre-season game.

MFK Ruzomberok beat Leeds 1-0 with Leeds boss Simon Grayson giving debuts to his six summer signings as well as two Slovakian trialists.

Leeds boss Grayson says that striker Davide Somma is firmly in his plans for the new season having scored 9 goals in 14 games whilst on loan at Lincoln City at the end of last season.

2011
A number of clubs are reportedly chasing the clubs player of the season Max Gradel. Leeds are reported to have turned down a bid from West Ham United for the winger.

Leeds skipper Jonny Howson says he is looking for the club to improve on last season`s seventh placed finish. Speaking with the side on tour in Scotland, Howson said, 'If you`re looking to improve, and obviously we are, then sixth place is a fair expectation.

'Improving on last season means finishing sixth and it`s what we`ll be aiming to do. It`s what the fans will demand of us too.

'I`d expect us to learn a lot from last season and in certain respects we`ll be better for it. It was quite a difficult season to judge because, as a whole, we went a lot closer to the play-offs than anyone expected. I didn`t hear too many people tipping us before the season.'
