LUFC Youngsters benefitted from friendlies

Leeds United reserve team manager Neil Redfearn says the youngsters at the club benefitted last season from the club pulling out of the reserve league.

The club decided to ditch their involvement in the reserve league in preference to arranging a number of behind closed doors friendlies last season.

Academy players Ross Killock, Dominic Poleon, Simon Lenighan, Sam Byram and Charlie Clamp, have all signed either their first professional contracts with the club this summer. Fellow academy player Monty Gimpel will also sign his first professional contract at the start of July.

Nathan Turner and Lewis Turner have extended their current contracts after fulfilling the first year of their professional contracts last season.

Redfearn believes that it is the young players involvement in the behind closed doors games that has earned them professional contracts.

Speaking on Yorkshire Radio, Redfearn said, "The quality of opposition we had was far greater and the boys have had a lot of benefit from these games. They were an integral part of the reserves last season.

"The seasoned pros that have played have done really well and have gone about their business but the mainstays have been the kids."

Leeds played a number of behind closed downs friendlies last season with Chelsea, Newcastle, Glasgow Celtic, Hull, Blackpool, Middlesbrough and Leicester amongst the opposition.

Will be nice to see a few given a chance next season.

I wouldn't have thought they would have been able to pull out of the reserve league. But if its benefiting the team by playing against what must be considered better opposition then carry on doing this.
