LUFC Clayton not worth more than players coming in

LUFC Clayton not worth more than players coming in

Leeds United manager Neil Warnock feels he can replace Adam Clayton with a player costing less than the fee he is likely to receive for the midfielder.

Was placed on the transfer list last week after negotiations between the club and the player broke down and Warnock is hoping to move on quickly with the promise of a busy summer ahead at Elland Road has Warnock looks to build a squad capable of making a sustained challenge for promotion.

Speaking in the Yorkshire Evening Post, Warnock said, "It was pointless fudging it. I`m sure there`ll be a number of clubs after Adam because he`s done well this season in a lot of games.

"But if we can`t agree what I think is a decent offer, we have to move on quickly. If there are casualties then so be it. We don`t have time to dwell on that and you`ve got to make decisions. I want to be doing things yesterday.

"Like a few other players he only had a year left and it`s up to the club to make a realistic offer. I felt that the offer from the club was realistic.

"I have to look at it and say that I`ll be signing a player for £400,000 or £500,000 and I don`t feel Adam`s worth more than the player I`ll be signing."

Clayton has just over twelve months remaining on his contract having joined the club from Manchester City in the summer of 2010.

The 23 year old was an almost ever present in the Leeds midfield last season making 46 appearances and scoring six goals.

Warnock has so far brought in just defender Jason Pearce from Portsmouth but reports suggest that the club are close to signing the defenders teammate Joel Ward from Fratton Park.
