LUFC Bates - No money being put into Casino

LUFC Bates - No money being put into Casino

Leeds United chairman says the club stand to gain a new West Stand free of charge if the club win the licensing right for a new casino to be built in the city.

Leeds are one of five venues vying for the license in the city and Bates feels they have an advantage having already been earmarked as a venue for a casino in the city in the past.

Speaking about the possibility of the casino at Elland Road on Yorkshire Radio, Bates said, "We were approached and we have put a syndicate together. Leeds will be part of it because we have the land, parking facilities and all the other facilities that will be put in place, which will make it the ideal venue.

"We will not be putting any money into it and our return will be a new West Stand, which will be as good as the rejuvenated East Stand.

"We are in the early stages. There are five bidders in Leeds of which we are one. I think we have a natural advantage because when the talk of a new casino came up some years ago it was always envisaged then to be based at Elland Road until the whole thing was dropped."

As well as a new stand, Bates also feels the casino would be good for the future of the club, with another money generating business all year round bringing money into the club. "It will be a great fillip to the club and a new source of income. I keep having to empathise; we have to generate money, which is not directly associated with football because we need it to be a success all-year round to be a successful club," added Bates.
