LUFC Warnock - I needed a look at Thompson

Neil Warnock said he only decided on Saturday morning to play youngster Zac Thompson who came back into the side after serving his three-match suspension following his sending off at Reading.

Thompson was making his first appearance for Warnock at Reading over Easter and he lasted just twelve minutes before being sent off for a reckless challenge on Reading midfielder Jobi McAnuff.

Speaking after the game on Yorkshire Radio, Warnock jokingly said, he had to take a look at Thompson because he had only previously seen him kick somebody. "I decided on Saturday morning to go with Thompson. I was going to go with Danny Webber but I did not know what Zac could do really, other than kick somebody."

Warnock was pleased with the young midfielder`s performance in the 1-1 draw at Cardiff, feeling he had a steady game. "I gave him a proper game to see what he could do. I thought he did well. Both him and Pugh were steady in midfield.

"He will learn. He allowed players to run off him at times but he is only young and he will learn. I thought the game did him some good. He couldn`t finish the season on the sending off at Reading,"
added Warnock.

The 19 year old has made nine appearances for Leeds this season and he has played at both right back and in the centre of midfield for Warnock and previous manager Simon Grayson.

The youngster signed for Leeds last season after a successful trial at Elland Road after coming through the academy system at Everton.

Thompson is out of contract at Elland Road this summer and with Warnock promising a clear out it will be interesting to see whether Thompson will be offered a new deal.
