LUFC Grayson talks about Leeds sacking

Former Leeds United manager Simon Grayson has made his first comments about his sacking from the club three weeks ago.

Grayson was a guest on Talksport on Wednesday with Adrian Durham and Darren Gough and he was asked about his time at Elland Road and whether it came as a shock with the club still in the hunt for a play-off place.

Speaking on the show, Grayson said, "The one thing you are guaranteed in football is you are always going to get the sack.

"We thought we had done a good job and we left them in a better state than when we arrived, with the promotion and finishing seventh last year and the team were only three points outside the play offs.

"Chairmen make the decisions, whether you think it is the right one or not you have to accept it and you move on."

Grayson started his playing career with the academy at Leeds before being released by Howard Wilkinson.

He has always confessed to being a supporter of the club growing up in Yorkshire and he says it was a fantastic honour to manage the club he supports. "It was a fantastic honour to be the manager of Leeds United and it was a big part in my football development as a manager and I was grateful for that opportunity, continued Grayson.

Leeds Chairman Ken Bates has made a number of comments on local radio and his programme notes in the match day programme since Grayson`s departure and the former manager was not willing to be drawn into his side of the story and preferred to walk away from the club with his head held high.

Grayson was asked by Adrian Durham about the comments made by Bates following his sacking but the former Leeds boss would only say, "One or two things have been said since that I am not necessarily too happy about but that has now gone. I have left the club with my head held high with a bit of dignity and I can move on and look forward to a new chapter in my football career.

"We had a good relationship to be fair, we spoke daily about football and we disagreed on certain situations but it is not something that I am going to comment on because I have left there and not commented in the three weeks I have been out of football on any of the situations.

"I have left the football club in a better state than when I walked in into it just over three years ago and if you can manage to do that as a manager regardless of who your chairman is then you can think you have done a good job."

Leeds appointed Neil Warnock as his successor last week and Grayson was asked whether he thought Leeds could still make the end of season play offs and what he thought of the new appointment. "They are still in with a good shout. There are probably a dozen teams, who still think they can get there.

"I think they have got the right man for the job in Neil. He knows the division, he knows what is required to get the best out of players and we did leave a team there that probably did over achieve for the last eighteen months in the championship but there are some good players there, so anything could happen if Neil gets to grips with it. "

Grayson is quickly back in employment after was appointed the new manager of Huddersfield Town at the start of this week.

His former backroom staff at Elland Road Ian Miller and Glynn Snodin join him at the Galpharm Stadium.

The duo were also sacked along with Grayson following Leeds defeat to Birmingham City on January 31st.
