LUFC Redfearn expecting tough test

LUFC Redfearn expecting tough test

Leeds United caretaker manager Neil Redfearn is expecting a tough test when Brighton and Hove Albion visit Elland Road on Saturday.

Former Leeds assistant manager Gus Poyet manages Brighton and they are enjoying a good season in their first back in the championship.

This following winning the League One title last season in his first season in charge of the South coast club.

The seagulls are unbeaten in eight games and are behind Leeds only on goal difference, winning four and drawing one of their last five championship games as well as knocking Newcastle United out of the FA Cup, which has seen Poyet shortlisted today for the January manager of the month.

Speaking on Yorkshire Radio, Redfearn said, "He has got them playing and he is brave enough to have them playing out from the back.

"They have hit some form of late and they are up there in the current form guide as well, I don`t think they have lost in their last six.

"They are on a roll and they are doing it by playing good football, so it is going to be a tough test"

This will be Poyet`s first return to Elland Road since leaving the club in the autumn of 2007.

Poyet was assistant manager to Denis Wise at Elland Road and spent just over a year at the club between 2006-2007.

The former Uruguayan international, helped mastermind Leeds rise from their -15 point start to the season in the 200708 season. That was until he left in October of that season to take up the assistant manager`s post at Tottenham Hotspur.

His departure coincided with Leeds drop in form in League One.

He was linked with the vacant manager`s position at Leeds last week. He ruled himself out of the running, having only signed a new five-year deal with Brighton in September.

Brighton were the early season pacesetter in the championship, winning five and drawing one of their first six games.

Their form has been indifferent since. They went on a run of nine games without a win before winning four of their next five.

They then lost four in a row before returning to winning ways with a 2-0 win over Southampton.

They have picked up thirteen points from a possible fifteen this year and are along with Leeds just two points outside the play off places.

When the two sides met at the Amex Stadium in September, they shared the points in a six-goal thriller. Leeds looked to be coasting to victory in the first half thanks to goals from Andy Keogh and Ross McCormack.

Brighton hit back in the second half. Craig Mackail-Smith and an Ashley Barnes penalty brought the sides level inside the hour and another from Mackail-Smith looked to have won the game for Brighton.

McCormack scored the equaliser for Leeds deep into stoppage time to earn Leeds a point in an entertaining game in front of the live Sky TV cameras.
