LUFC Lonergan - The defending was shocking

Leeds United captain and goalkeeper Andy Lonergan says shocking defending cost Leeds in the 4-1 defeat by Birmingham City on Tuesday night.

Leeds started the game brightly and took a deserved lead through Ross McCormack but opposition striker Nikola Zigic scored four unchallenged goals to win the game for Birmingham, including three goals in seven minutes during the second half.

Speaking on Yorkshire Radio, Lonergan said, "It was shocking defending. It wasn`t just the defence it was the whole team.

"They had one option, they hit him four times and he scored four goals. It was just not good enough as a team.

"We had a good few chances. The first thirty-five minutes was outstanding, absolutely brilliant. The game is about 90 minutes and it does not matter when you win the game or how you win the game, it is all about the result."

The result also cost Simon Grayson his position as Leeds boss as he was sacked today after three years in charge at Elland Road.

Leeds have won just two of their last eight championship games but are still only three points outside the play off places.

Neil Redfearn will take charge of the squad ahead of the game at Bristol City on Saturday with Neil Warnock the early favourite to take over from Grayson.
