LUFC Grayson keeping an eye on Alan Smith

Leeds United boss Simon Grayson says he will be keeping an eye on former player Alan Smith after he signed on loan with MK Dons for the remainder of the season.

Leeds have been linked with Smith since the summer after being told by parent club Newcastle United that he was free to find another club.

Grayson admits that the club were interested in the summer but his lack of first team opportunity so far this season was a key factor in the club not making a move in January.

Speaking on the official website, Grayson said, "There`s been a lot of speculation about us and Alan Smith. The truth is that we discussed the matter more in the summer than now.

"We spoke about him many times and weighed up all sorts of things, including the response of the fans. In the end, the reason we didn`t move was purely a footballing decision.

"Alan has been training, but he hasn`t been playing games, and that was really the deciding factor. The MK move will be great for him because the best thing he can do is play games.

"He is out of contract with Newcastle at the end of the season, and we will definitely be keeping an eye him over the next few weeks and months."

Smith has made just two substitute appearances for the magpies this season.

He came off the bench against Fulham in August and played just four minutes whilst his only other appearance at Norwich in December saw him enter the pitch in time added on for stoppages.

Grayson also indicated that Leeds would have been expected to pay a lot more than the £2,500 per week that MK Dons are reportedly paying to Newcastle for his services.

That means the Leeds being linked with Smith will not go away next summer either.
