LUFC Delph - I only wanted to return to Leeds
Fabian Delph says he was only ever interested in coming back to Leeds United after speaking to Aston Villa manager Alex McLeish about the possibility of a loan spell away from Villa Park.
Delph has made just 34 appearances for Villa since signing from Leeds in the summer of 2009. He made 15 appearances in his first season before injury brought a premature end to his season.
The 20 year old suffered a cruciate knee ligament injury in training in April of 2010, an injury that ruled him out until Boxing Day of the same year.
He went on to make just 8 appearances that season and he has added just 11 this season, his last coming in the game against Liverpool on December 18th.
Delph spoke to Villa boss McLeish and said it would be beneficial to both club and player if he had time out on loan to get match fitness.
Speaking on Yorkshire Radio, Delph said, I mentioned to the manager at Villa that if I am not going to be playing games I would like to go out and play some games. I told him I would like to find some form, I have been injured for nearly two years now and it has been a difficult rollercoaster and it would be better for the club and better for me if I go out and play some games."
McLeish and Delph agreed and he was made available on loan at the start of the month.
Leeds have beaten off completion from other clubs for the signing of Delph, with the midfielder admitting Elland Road was the only place he wanted to go to once he was made available. "It was the only place I wanted to go. I had a few options but as soon as my agent told me there was a possibility of me coming back to Leeds, I was 100% coming back," continued Delph.
Delph will go straight into the squad, for the game with Ipswich Town at Elland Road on Saturday.
The England under 21 international will be hoping to make his first appearance at Elland Road on Saturday, since the play off semi-final against Millwall in May 2009.
