Vital Leeds is to have a new weekly feature. Leeds fan Tim Steere is going to write a weekly article on Leeds United with the first one coming very soon.
Tim gave me a bit of background into his life following Leeds.
I`m Tim and after contacting Daz asking how I could help out, I was kindly given the opportunity to write for the site including a weekly column about all things Leeds United.
It`s a fantastic opportunity and one I`m looking forward to. But why should you be bothered about reading my column? A fair question. So here`s a little background on myself.
I`ve been a Leeds fan since I was four years old, in a season when we returned back to the top flight, after a bit of an exile through a famous day in Bournemouth in 1990. My trade is as a freelance sports radio journalist, which, still in its infancy, has seen me cover rugby league and football matches. No premiership grounds yet, but I have been to Spotland…
My earliest Leeds United memory was sitting on my dad`s lap, watching Grandstand, and seeing the league table at the end of the 91/92 season. There was me thinking, I could get used to this success as a Leeds fan.
Memories of my first Leeds United game are vague, but it was at home to Sheffield Wednesday in 1994. After some research, it was on 4th March and we lost 1-0. Chris Waddle with the only goal. Now I can`t remember anything about the game, and seeing as we lost, I`m assuming I was only developing the skill that has come in handy recently of blocking out defeats from my mind to stop the onset of severe depression.
That`s my excuse, and I`m sticking to it.
But it did start the real passion I had of following the club, buying new kits religiously and worshipping my new heroes. The first name I ever had on the back of my shirt was Speed 11. My mum bought her own iron on letters and numbers and did it herself, it was a lot cheaper! The kit in question was a Thistle Hotels shirt with the blue gold blue striping across the middle.
A classy shirt, I was so pleased to have the name of my first football hero on my kit. As you can probably imagine, the devastation on hearing about his death was something I will never forget.
After enjoying UEFA cup matches at Elland Road and the success under David O`Leary, me and my dad made the plunge at the end of 2001/2 season and bought our first season ticket. Back row of the Kop, N8. A dream come true. Unfortunately, our time as season ticket holders wasn`t very successful. We oversaw two relegations. After price rises before our first season in League 1, we reluctantly gave them up.
We did wonder if we were responsible for our downfall. We were very superstitious and considering how after finishing 5th in 2001/2 to suddenly see such a dramatic fall, we did begin to think it was us. Sad, I know.
Although in that time, my very first Leeds vs them lot from Old Trafford (will be referred to as 'them lot` for the foreseeable) match at Elland Road was the 1-0 win with that Harry Kewell goal. Not a wildly interesting fact but always worth mentioning!
I`ve been to both play off finals recently at Cardiff and Wembley and was in the East stand upper for our return to the Championship. A variety of emotions has been experienced, but like most Leeds fans from 'living the dream` to living the nightmare of League 1, I wouldn`t change anything.
So writing about my beloved club will be easy for me, as it has been my life for so long now and despite my freelance sports journalism job (radio) restricting my opportunities to get to Elland Road as much. I always keep a keen eye on events at the club and I`m looking forward to getting that across to you all.
Marching on Together now and always!
