LUFC Bates - We must bring in right players

Leeds United chairman Ken Bates says the club must make sure they bring in the right players during the January transfer window.

Leeds have already secured the services of Danny Pugh on a two and a half year deal after he had spent the last three months at Elland Road on loan.

They have also brought in exciting winger Andros Townsend from Tottenham Hotspur on loan for the remainder of the season.

Bates says that anyone that arrives at the club in January must be good enough to help Leeds towards promotion and also be ready to go straight into the side.

Speaking on Yorkshire Radio, Bates said, "Whoever we sign in January, whether it is purchase or loan, we have got to get it right because they are going to take us through to the end of the season. Hopefully get us in the play offs and hopefully win us promotion.

"We want players who have been playing regularly, we don`t want to sign them and then take a month to get them fit because they haven`t been playing any matches.

With Leeds in cup action at Arsenal next Monday, they are now without a league game until January 14th when they travel to Crystal Palace.

Bates feels this will give them time to assess the market before adding to the squad. "It is a fortnight until our next league game, so it means we can think carefully and not rush in," continued Bates.

The Leeds chairman stated recently that players would have to leave to free up some wages.

Andy Keogh and Alex McCarthy have both left Elland Road this week after coming to the end of their loans at the club, whilst Paul Rachubka has extended his loan at Tranmere Rovers for a further month having moved to Prenton Park on loan in November.

How the hell are we going to get someone 'who is playing regulary' for another team to come to Leeds unless they are from a lower division.
