LUFC Grayson hoping for selection headache

Leeds United boss Simon Grayson is hoping returning goalkeeper Andy Lonergan gives him a selection headache over the Christmas period by playing well on Saturday.

Lonergan returns to the side against Reading after missing the last eleven games with a broken finger.

Since Lonergan has been out, Alex McCarthy has joined on loan from Reading and impressed.

McCarthy is unable to play on Saturday against his parent club Reading and Grayson is hoping the returning Lonergan can give him a welcome selection problem with the busy festive period ahead.

Speaking in the Yorkshire Evening Post, Grayson said, "I hope he keeps a clean sheet and gives me a problem for the game after.

"If Lonergan plays really well - and I expect him to play really well to be fair - then I`ll have a decision to make when we play Derby on Boxing Day.

"Alex`s form makes it interesting and the situation is something to debate over the next couple of weeks."

McCarthy initially joined Leeds on a month`s loan but after keeping three clean sheets in five appearances, Leeds extended the loan into a second month.

Leeds also have experienced goalkeeper Maik Taylor at the club and Grayson and he believes all three are battling it out for a place in the side. "I`m just grateful that we`ve got Alex available after tomorrow`s game and Maik Taylor too.

"The question of who`s number one and number two will be decided come kick-off on Boxing Day," Grayson continued.

Leeds have once again struggled defensively this season but since the arrival of McCarthy they seemed to have turned the corner, having conceded just four goals in their last six games, after having had to wait until October for their first clean sheet of the season.
