LUFC Bates - Becchio going nowhere

Leeds United chairman Ken Bates says they have no plans to sell Luciano Becchio in the January transfer window.

Becchio still has two and a half years left on his current contract having signed a new deal last December.

Fellow championship side Middlesbrough have been linked with Becchio this week and Bates says that they would definitely not be selling him to a team in direct competition.

Speaking on Yorkshire Radio, Bates said, "I don`t mind somebody floating the idea from Middlesbrough because it`s the usual way they tap up players these days of course but if they think we are going to sell our leading goalscorer to our probably closing competitor for promotion they must be out of their tiny minds. Apart from which, I read Tony Mowbray saying that their chairman isn`t a bottomless pit and they haven`t got much money anyway so they wouldn`t be able to afford him anyway, if we were inclined to sell him, which we`re not."

Becchio has recently returned to the starting line-up after missing the whole of pre-season through injury.

The clubs leading goalscorer last season had to wait until September for his first appearance of the season when he came off the bench to score against Crystal Palace.

Becchio had made just one start this season in the Carling Cup against Manchester United before winning his place back in the side against Barnsley at the end of November.

The Argentinian has now started the last four games and he will be hoping to get back amongst the goals having netted just twice so far this season.

Like Delph and Gradel before him. Bates was also whinging about the wage bill and the size of the squad in his Yorkshire Radio interview. Don't expect any significant signings in January and we will probably see more going out than coming in. He still expects us to go up though!
