LUFC Grayson interested in extending McCarthy stay

Leeds United boss Simon Grayson has revealed that he would be interested in keeping goalkeeper Alex McCarthy past his current loan spell.

McCarthy joined on loan from Reading last month and Leeds have won four of their five games since his arrival.

Leeds have struggled to keep clean sheets this season, managing just two before his arrival.

Since he arrived at Leeds, they have managed three clean sheets in his five games.

McCarthy is due to return to Reading after the game with Watford this weekend but Grayson hasn`t ruled out an extended stay in Yorkshire for the England under 21 goalkeeper.

Speaking on Yorkshire Radio, Grayson said, "I`ve spoken to Brian to give him an update on where we are with Alex and how well he`s been doing.

"We`ve got Andy Lonergan on his way back but we`ve got to have enough options to see us through this period of his time.

"The one thing I can guarantee is that Alex won`t be playing against Reading next weekend but we`re not going to dismiss the idea of trying to keep him for a busy period. We`ve got weigh up all the options. He`ll be with us tomorrow and then it`ll be down to what both parties want to do.

"His performances for us suggest why people rate him so highly at Reading and on the England scene. He`s been very calm and composed for such a young player and he`s been a big part of our success recently."

McCarthy was brought in after regular number one Andy Lonergan was on the sidelines with a broken finger and number two Paul Rachubka was rested after suffering a nightmare run in the Leeds side. Rachubka came into the side following Lonergan`s injury but he suffered a nightmare few games in the Leeds goal, which culminated in him being substituted at half time in the 5-0 defeat by Blackpool.

Lonergan is now fit to return to the first team and Leeds have also recruited experienced goalkeeper Maik Taylor on a short-term deal.

I would like to see it happen but would Bates be prepared to pay the wages of four goalkeepers with Lonergan, Taylor and Cairns already at the club.
