LUFC Sam had special celebration planned

Leeds United midfielder Lloyd Sam was left disappointed after seeing his goal bound effort in the final minute of the game saved by Millwall goalkeeper Steve Mildenhall on Saturday.

Sam wears the number 11 shirt at Elland Road and he was hoping to score as he had his own special dedication planned for Gary Speed who died last week and was remembered at the game on Saturday
.
Speed famously wore the number 11 shirt during his eight years at Elland Road and only a fingertip save by Mildenhall denied Sam the goal he craved.

Speaking in the Daily Star, Sam said, "That should have gone in.
"I did everything right and put it in the corner but the keeper made a good save.
"It would have been perfect if I had scored while wearing Gary`s number, perhaps the highlight of my career.
"I`m sick I didn`t score because I was going to put the shirt on back to front then cover up my name so it would look like Gary`s."

Sam came off the substitute`s bench to replace injured skipper Jonny Howson in the first half and he played a key part on Leeds 2-0 win over Millwall.

The winger played in his more natural right wing position in the second half and he gave the Millwall defence a tough time.

It was Sam`s cross into the middle, which secured the win. Robert Snodgrass was on the end of his cross to head home.

Sam may be needed in the side now with Leeds still waiting to hear news on the severity of Howson`s knee injury at the weekend.

Leeds also lost fellow midfielder Michael Brown with an ankle injury in the first half.

Sam has had to be content with a number of appearances of the bench again this season. Saturday was his fourteenth appearance of the season, with only four of them being starts.

The winger joined Leeds in the summer of 2010 from Charlton Athletic but he has made just twelve starts in thirty-four appearances since his arrival.

It was a decent effort well saved. Shame it took Becchio so long to get his head up or Snoddy could have had his hat trick.
