LUFC Clayton - Silly mistakes proving costly

Leeds United midfielder Adam Clayton says the side show great battling qualities but says they need to cut out silly defensive errors if they are going to climb the table.

Leeds let a two goal lead slip at Brighton and Hove Albion on Friday night to find themselves trailing going into the final minutes of the game.

Once again, they managed to claw something back from the brink of defeat when Ross McCormack scored his second of the evening in time added on for stoppages.

It was the fifth point that Leeds have earned already this season from a losing position and they have scored late goals against West Ham, Crystal Palace, Bristol City and now Brighton, to turn no points into one and one point into three respectively.

Speaking on Yorkshire Radio, Clayton said, "When we do go a goal behind or two goals behind we never stop and we always try and get back into the game and more often than not we end up getting back into the game, so that is only a good sign."

Clayton cannot help but admit that it is silly mistakes that is costing Leeds points this season and believes that if they can cut out their defensive errors that will be contenders, come the end of the season. "If we could only stop going behind in the first place and conceding silly goals I am sure we will push up the league. If we could cut these silly mistakes out and start winning games 1-0 and 2-0 instead of 4-3 and 3-2 and things like that, then we will push up the league and I am sure we will be contenders when it comes to the end of the season," he continued.

Defensive lapses have been Leeds problem since their promotion to the championship.

Despite finishing in seventh place last season and in the play off positions for most of the season, they conceded seventy goals.

This season they have continued in the same vain and they have yet to keep a clean sheet in any competition this season.

They have already conceded fifteen goals this season with only Ipswich Town and Nottingham Forest having worse defensive records.

Manager Simon Grayson has already tried a number of different combinations in his back four but has yet he hasn`t found the formula to sort out Leeds leaky defence.

The defence is being highlighted for it's inabilities more and more. Confidence is rock bottom. No quick fix on this. Can't see Grayson being allowed to bring anymore in until he offloads a few.
