'If It's Football, It's Vital'

LUFC Fans View v Middlesbrough

Tiny T returns for his usual review of the players following a game at Elland Road.

This time after the 1-0 home defeat by Middlesbrough.

Lonergan 8
Kept us in the game with some good saves, though his distribution is a little slow and just knocked long. Thought he went down a little early with the goal

Lees 8
Solid performance from his first League start, just shaded by Clayton in my man of the match. He was caught out slightly for the goal.

Bromby 8
A rock at the back, blocking, tackling excellent

Kisnorbo 8
Like his defensive partner always in the thick of the action.

O'Dea 7
Solid enough but lacks pace to play at left back.

Gradel 6
Stupid second booking to get sent off, but lively before hand

Howson 7
Got stuck in and his first card was for the team, shouldn't have got a second, ridiculous Refereeing.

Brown 6
A little slow at times but rolled his sleeves up, as the going got tough.

Clayton 8 Star man
Involved everywhere, out on his feet but kept going, should have been given a chance last season.

Snodgrass 6
Reasonable but looks tired and unfit, tricky at times but just no spark.

McCormack 6
Runs round like a headless chicken at times, he needs to hold the ball but in fairness that`s not his game.

Substitutes
Nunez 6

Tough time but grafted.

Sam 5
Needs to work a little harder but we were up against it when he came on.

Thompson 6
Grafted hard to stem the flow.

Summary
The game was ruined by a Referee intent on making a name for himself. Lost control of the game in the first 5 minutes, then it was downhill all the way.
I can only hope that there was a Referee's Assessor in the stands and sends this one for extra training when he goes back to the Premier League. Messes Rooney and Co will be spending a lot of time watching games from the stands.

A good game of football ruined.

Plenty of effort today and the defence was outstanding with the confetti being flashed about, but we are lacking up front with no target man. Thought Lees made a difference at right back as did Bromby in the middle but we look weak at left back.

The midfield worked hard and there was invention with Clayton very nearly giving us the lead with an audacious lob from just inside the Boro half.

Even when down to nine, we worked hard and got forward all credit to the team.

Finally to Mr Ken Bates, the team needs investment as a wise man once said ' Investment does not guarantee success but without it you get left behind.'

Thanks Tiny for your views.

I only have a few views slightly different. I thought Lees played very well and the lad will score quite a few goals for us. Very intelligent passing down the line as well. Nice to see and not just the usual punt from Connolly that we usually see. However I thought he was very poor for the goal. Letting a predominantly right footed player cut back in on his right foot from a tight angle showed inexperience. All he needed to do was shown him out to his left and I doubt anything could have come from it. Lonergan - I would have given him man of the match, not one but six or seven excellent saves and how he could have been expected to do anything with the goal is beyond me. Another fantastic midfield display from Clayton and his attempt at goal in the first half shows the lad is full of confidence. Brwon huffed and puffed but for me isn't quick enough or fit enough. Expect him to be serving a one match suspension before the end of September. I actually thought McCormack worked really hard, did a lot of running that would usually open up plenty of gaps. I think we are trying to judge him against Becchio when I just don't think we can. He will never hold up balls (like Tiny says), not in the same league as Becchio and I we need a striker. Not impressed with O'Dea at left back. he's what I consider as an old fashioned centre back - head it / kick it and thats his limits. I think he's going to be the new Kilkenny by whinging at the referee all the time. Gradel - Howson - Grayson and the referee. Got to be honest I think Gradel's second booking was deserved and reckless, when your on a yellow card and you know what sort of referee we have got, you just don't dive in. Saying that how often do you actually see a referee just give a player a warning when already on a yellow. By the letter of the law it was deserved but doesn't often happen. His first yellow card would never had happened had McMahon not retaliated. Howson worked the referee a treat for the McMahon sending off and knew what he was doing. (I had actually just said to the bloke at the side of me that he would even the game up) Howson like you say, took one for the team with his first yellow, his second looked harsh, but Emnes knew what he was doing by clipping his own heels. With an ienpt referee who can't see a foul from a dive then he was always in trouble. What was mistifying was the fact he pointed for a Leeds free kick for what looked like a dive then by the time Emnes got up, he booked Howson. When you look how Howson got McMahon sent off, maybe what goes around comes around. Grayson got a lot wrong. Another thing I said to the bloke next to me was why leave Howson still as the last man when already on a yellow. He came close to fouling Emnes again shortly before his second yellow. Grayson should have taken him out of that position and brought Clayton back. When down to nine men and needing a goal why take off a striker and bring on a midfielder? McCormack and Nunez should or even Lees could have played together up top. We needed to take the gamble at the back but he left it until the final five minutes. I wasn't impressed with Nunez again, didn't make any impression and again showed head down and greed when shooting over from a very long way out when players were in better positions. He's going to get another start on Tuesday, needs to be a team player.

Just how I saw it, calls for Grayson out at the back of the Kop as I left. Some saying they won't return either
