LUFC Replacing forwards not a priority for Grayson

LUFC Replacing forwards not a priority for Grayson

Leeds United boss Simon Grayson believes The club have bigger priorities than replacing the injured Luciano Becchio and Davide Somma in attack at the moment.

The pair haven`t featured in Leeds two pre season games so far due to injury.

Becchio enjoyed his best season in front of goal for Leeds last season, netting twenty times before a hamstring injury against Watford in April brought his season to a premature end.

Somma netted twelve times in thirty-two appearances last season, although he only completed ninety minutes on seven occasions.

Somma looks like spending a lengthy time on the sidelines after suffering a cruciate knee ligament injury in a behind closed doors friendly last week, whilst Becchio is still recovering from the surgery on his hamstring at the end of last season.

Speaking in the Yorkshire Evening Post, Grayson said, "They`re obviously two big losses and two good players in the same position.
"We`ve got very good options in attack if everyone`s fit and available.
"I don`t want to comment on Luciano`s injury until I know exactly how he is, and we should find out today. Whether we`re planning to strengthen (in attack) you`ll have to wait and see, but there are other areas of the team where I need to add players and other areas that are probably a bigger priority."

This leaves Leeds with just Ross McCormack, Billy Paynter and Mike Grella as recognised strikers at the club.

All three struggled in the championship last season, scoring just three goals between them in fourty-two appearances.

Paynter netted just the once at Preston in March in twenty-three appearances.

McCormack netted in Leeds final two games of the season, to get off the mark in Leeds colours twenty-one appearances.

Grella has been placed on the transfer list after making just two substitute appearances last season and spending some of the season on loan at Carlisle United and Swindon Town.

Leeds do have other options with Max Gradel and Ramon Nunez able to be used in a more advanced position.

Grayson may not have covering the position at the top of his list, with just one recognised goalkeeper currently at the club and just one of the two positions vacated by Neil Kilkenny and Bradley Johnson filled.

The manager admits they are at advanced stages in negotiations with a couple of players, but with just 18 days until the new season starts, time is running out.
