LUFC Grayson - We had to protect our assets

Leeds United boss Simon Grayson admits they negotiated a new deal ahead of schedule with Patrick Kisnorbo to protect their assets.

Kisnorbo was a free agent on July 1st after coming to the end of his two-year contract at Elland Road.

The Australian international missed fourteen months after requiring surgery on his Achilles in March 2010 and was returning to Leeds in pre season to try and prove his fitness to the Leeds boss and earn a new deal.

Leeds decided to do things ahead of schedule after a number of clubs became interested in the services of the clubs player of the year in 2010.

Grayson, speaking in the Yorkshire Evening Post explained the clubs decision to bring forward the contract negotiations, "Paddy`s a valuable asset and I wouldn`t be doing my job if I didn`t protect him.
"There was always the risk that he had a storming pre-season and found other clubs trying to sign him. We had to cover our backs.
"He`s looking fit and strong and it was always our intention - and his - to get a new contract signed and sealed as soon as possible.
"Doing it last weekend suited everyone concerned."

The 30 year old signed a new two year deal at Elland Road last week and is already well on his way to returning to full fitness after starting both Leeds pre season friendlies so far.

He completed over an hour in both games, completing 63 minutes at Falkirk and 66 minutes at Motherwell.

I am glad we got it sorted early. If he can remain fit he is a huge asset to the club.
