LUFC Nunez still hard at work in America

Whilst most players are enjoying their summer holidays Leeds midfielder Ramon Nunez is still hard at work representing Honduras in the Gold Cup in America .

The tournament is for national sides in North and South America as well as the Caribbean.

Honduras started with a 0-0 draw against Guatemala in their group before trouncing Grenada 7-1 in their second game.

Jamaica beat them 1-0 in their final group game to finish runners-up behind their Caribbean opponents.

They booked their place in the semi finals after defeating Costa Rica 4-2 on penalties after the game had finished 1-1 after extra time on Saturday night.

Nunez came off the bench for Honduras and was almost the hero in the last minute of normal time when his shot was pushed around the post.

Honduras owed much to goalkeeper Noel Valladares who saved a penalty in the 76th minute of normal time.

Costa Rica then saw two of their spot kicks come back off the woodwork as Honduras converted all four of their kicks to earn a semi final place against defending champions and five time winners Mexico in Houston on Wednesday.

Nunez didn`t take a spot kick during the shoot out.

Nunez has been a used substitute in all four of their games so far in the tournament.

The 25 year old will be hoping to come back to Elland Road in pre season and force himself into Simon Grayson`s first team plans after making just two substitute appearances last season.

He finished the season off at Scunthorpe United where he scored three times in eight appearances.

The lively winger signed a new one-year deal at Elland Road at the end of the season following his success at Scunthorpe and he also enjoyed international recognition when he came away with the Most Valuable Player award at the Copa Centro Americana tournament in January as he helped Honduras win the tournament.

In the other half of the draw, USA play Jamaica and Panama face El Salvador today for a place in the semi finals.

The games are being shown live on Eurosport2, and you can watch Honduras in action against Mexico, in their semi final from midnight on Wednesday evening.

This is probably going to mean that he will get an extra few weeks off as the first team report back for training in under three weeks. Is this going to put him at the back of the pecking order for next season as well?

I don't think it matters if Nunez is a world beater with Brazil he doesn't seem to be in the plans of Grayson yet he gives him a new deal. I suppose he needs to find two new favourite players to keep in the team all season, no matter how rubbish they are with Johnson and Kilkenny leaving.
