LUFC Grayson Lots to take into consideration

Leeds United boss Simon Grayson refused to rule the club out of a move for former players Alan Smith and Jonathan Woodgate but admits there are a lot of things to take into consideration.

Newcastle United have told Smith that he is free to find a new club despite still having a year remain on his contract whilst Woodgate has been released by Tottenham Hotspur.

Since the news, Leeds have been strongly linked with a return for the pair with Chairman Ken Bates admitting that the club hadn`t ruled themselves out of a move for Smith.

Grayson believes though that there is a lot to take into consideration especially with the pair having bad injury records in recent seasons. Speaking in the Yorkshire Evening Post , Grayson said, "We`re interested in good players but that doesn`t mean those two will necessarily be signing for us.
"It`s something I have to consider because when good players become available you have to be interested but you have to look at the other side too - finances and injuries. Like any signing, you have to make sure all the ingredients are right.
"Jonathan`s not played too much football and Alan missed quite a part of last season, but if you had a fit Jonathan Woodgate and a fit Alan Smith then you`d have a host of clubs queuing up for them. The one thing we`ve got going for us is that they know the club and our ambition."

With the players only a few weeks away from pre season training and most players now back from their summer vacations, we wait for the first transfer activity of the summer at Elland Road.

Firstly they would have to take a huge wage cut and do we really want to risk paying players our top line on wages with such bad injury records in recent years.

There are ways to get round the wage problem. And even Woodgate with one leg would still be better than the laughable excuses for the centre backs of last season..

Collins could not find a decent position in the Kama Sutra, whilst even O'Brien looked distinctly average towards the end of the season. However, I am sure that Harry - who is a canny chap - had good reason to refuse even the offer of a PAYP contract. Woodgate really has had a dreadful time with injuries, and one has to wonder if he will ever perform consistently again. I fear not, and, in considering the likely financial implications, and Mr Bates propensity to save money at every opportunity, I wonder if this is the right option. I am indifferent to Smithy tbh. I do not believe that he has been the same player post Anfield - but, if he could retain some former commitment, whilst retaining his temper, he could fill the midfield void that has been so apparent for the last couple of years. IMO.

Its a huge gamble to take if he was to offer them contracts. I honestly can't see Bates taking that sort of risk.
