LUFC We always find replacements

Nathan Brien continues his weekly article, this time looking at Leeds ability to find replacements in the transfer market.

We Always Find Replacements

It was over seven years ago now, when Leeds united lost their Premier League status, fans were flabbergasted by the fact that the mighty Leeds United would be playing in the second tier of English football.

I remember that summer very well, and what an awful one it was too. Being forced to off load a number of key players in a bid to aid soaring debts. Mark Viduka, Alan Smith and James Milner were the major names to return to the Premier League, followed by a number of free agent signings that most fans had never heard of, overall it was a depressing summer for everyone involved with the club.

That was then, and this is now. Things have changed dramatically; we have gone from one local hero Alan Smith to another Jonny Howson. We enter another summer but this time debt free, and after a successful season back in the Championship, expectations are very high. The club is not in a position in which they have to sell start players, this being evident in the rejection of a 3.5 million big from Norwich for Robert Snodgrass. Bradley Johnson look set for a Bosman switch to former Championship and League One rivals Norwich City, many fans seem to have mixed emotions on this departure.

I think fans forget that Johnson started 40 games for Leeds last season, so his departure is always going to leave a gap. One thing I will say is Leeds always seems to find replacements. That first season in the Coca Cola Championship was a platform for Leeds to build on. With all those players leaving in the summer, we found replacements, maybe not of the same standard but we pulled through.

When Jermaine Beckford left for Everton this summer I can honestly say I was not panicking in the slightest, Becchio stepped up to plate magnificently and our scouts spotted another gem in Davide Somma. Leeds have a way of recovering well from departures, with Johnson and Kilkenny moving this summer I`m sure we will replace them. Let`s be honest I think most fans out there know that we can do better than those two, it`s just up to Ken Bates and Simon Grayson to use their summer wisely.

Thanks
Nathan

A very interesting article. I am really not to worried about replacing Johnson or Kilkenny this summer. If we haven't already got better (if only Grayson would give them a chance) then I am sure it wouldn't be hard to replace two very average players who were amongst Graysons favourites. What is worrying is that these two players are both being linked with several premier League clubs. Have I been missing something since January 2008? Kilkenny's inability to put a tackle in when the going gets tough. Johnsons inability to find a player in the same shirt ten yards away and more often that not hitting row Z when shooting. Some players think they are much better than they actually are, I am sure Beckford walked away from Leeds last summer thinking to himself 'they will miss me', did we? I think not as we scored goals from all across the pitch this season as he wasn't the centre of attention craving the ball. There have been much bigger and better players that have only been too proud to pull on the Leeds shirt over the years than some of these prima donnas who have represented us since the turn of the century. A good read

"I think fans forget that Johnson started 40 games for Leeds last season, so his departure is always going to leave a gap." Fans dont forget that Johnson was on the pitch for 40 games or so.What they dont forget is what he did in most of them !!! Most of the time it was passing the ball to opposition players, blasting hopeful shots into the stands from promising positions, being tactically naive and marking space instead of men and giving away stupid free kicks in dangerous positions. His play improved after he was transfer listed but it is unclear who this was to benefit, Bradley or Leeds ??? I held out hopes that he would 'break out' and emerge as the powerful box to box midfielder we always wanted but it never happened and when he does join the attack his pedestrian pace dosnt enable him to get back and recover his position if he loses the ball. If there isnt better out there we really are struggling.

How many times have we signed poor players. Graysons not got a great record since his arrival when you look at some of the poor players he's signed. We may find replacements but its not always straight away.

I share the view that Bradley (despite his 40 starts) and Killa (40 verbal scraps!) should not prove too difficult to replace. In one considers th eproblem in purely footballing terms then I contend that neither are particularly blessed - for reasons adequately outlined above. My real concern however, remains Larry's dubious record in securing quality acquisitions in any area of the pitch. To suggest is record is "patchy" in this regard is akin to suggesting Tony Blair struggled with self esteem. But surely this lamentable record is due a change for the better - if only because of the law of avarages! As indicated, I personally do not believe we should miss either Kilkenny or Boris - but it might be that Mr Grayson manages to prove me wrong with a couple of midfield plodders in the Collins/Bessone mould. Time will tell.
