LUFC Season review - September

LUFC Season review - September

Vital Leeds now looks back at September when Leeds had a problem with midweek fixtures.

Leeds finished August in the Play off places after a good start to life back in the Championship after three years away.

Amdy Faye was added to the squad in the first week of the month. The experienced midfielder signed after enjoying a successful trial at the club.

They had to wait until September 11th for their first league game of the month after having a week off due to international fixtures.

Leeds entertained Swansea City in their first game of the month and had to come from behind to claim all three points.

Second half goals from Bradley Johnson and Luciano Becchio proved enough as Leeds continued their early season form and ability to come from behind to claim points.

Leeds were quickly back in action in midweek at Barnsley.

Almost 7,000 Leeds fans made the short trip down the motorway and they were given an early cheer when John Howson fired Leeds into the lead.

Unfortunately, what was to become Leeds Achilles heel all season, the defence, went missing and Barnsley hit back to score five times before Davide Somma scored a late consolation goal for Leeds.

Leeds quickly faced another trip to South Yorkshire on the Friday night.

A much better defensive performance in an entertaining 0-0 draw at Doncaster Rovers ensured a point. Davide Somma came close to earning Leeds all three points but his goal was ruled out for offside.

Sheffield United made it three games in a row against South Yorkshire opposition, this time at Elland Road.

In a game that saw a player sent off from each side, Leeds gained all three points thanks to a late Bradley Johnson goal.

Robert Snodgrass, who had only just returned from injury, was the Leeds player to receive a red card for two yellow cards during the game.

Another midweek game was to quickly follow with Leeds ending up on the wrong end of a ten-goal thriller, at home to Preston.

Leeds fell behind to an early Jon Parkin strike but hit back to lead 4-1 before half time thanks to, two goals from Davide Somma, one from Luciano Becchio and a first for the club by defender Alex Bruce.

Preston hit back, Jon Parkin completed a hat trick as the Lancashire side inflicted a 6-4 defeat on Leeds. It was the first time in the clubs history; Leeds had conceded six goals at home.
It was a disappointing end to what had been another productive month.

Leeds had picked up seven points from a possible fifteen but had conceded eleven goals in two midweek games.

The Preston result saw Leeds finish the month in tenth place but only three points behind second placed Cardiff City.

Next week we will be looking back at October, when after a poor start to the month, Leeds finished it with an impressive win at Scunthorpe, which would set them on an unbeaten run that would last until the New Year.
