LUFC A view from Bury - Tom Lees

LUFC A view from Bury - Tom Lees

Vital Leeds got in contact with Bury independent website manny road end and their editor, The Boy Holty who happily answered some questions about Tom Lees.

The youngster spent last season on loan at Gigg Lane, becoming an almost ever present as he helped the club win promotion to League One.

Had you heard of Lees prior to him signing for Bury and what did you think of his signing when it was announced?
No, I'd never heard of him before he signed for Bury but we'd played Leeds in an early pre-season friendly and he'd been in a Leeds shirt for that game. We won it 4-0 so most fans were probably a bit under whelmed at the signing at first.

What did you think of Lees during his time at Gigg Lane?
He was everything you would ever want from a central defender. Solid, consistent and even popped up with a few goals.
He was playing alongside Efe Sodje whose experience probably benefited Lees, but whilst his defensive partner changed from time to time, Lees was totally dependable throughout the season and was many peoples' vote for player of the season.

What were his strengths and weaknesses?
Strengths: He played as if he had 500 games under his belt, but he's only 20. He reads the game well and he doesn't mess about. If the ball needs to be dispatched to row Z, then there will be a broken seat on row Z and if it can be passed sensibly out of defence, then that's what he will do and possession will be maintained.

There are no weaknesses as far as I could see.

Would you have liked him to stay at Bury?
It would be brilliant if we could keep him for another season and going up to league one could help that to happen. Bury fans were rooting for Leeds to go up as he is not ready for the premier league just yet. However, I think Simon Grayson has his head screwed on and Tom Lees should play a big part in Leeds team next season.

Did the Bury fans come up with any good chants or nicknames for Lees?
Nah, we're rubbish at that sort of thing. Besides, the name Tom Lees doesn't really lend itself to any established songs. I imagine the most exciting nickname was Leesy.

Thanks to The Boy Holty for answering the questions.
