LUFC Gradel wins Player of the season award

Leeds United midfielder Max Gradel picked up the Player of the Year award at Saturday night`s end of season awards dinner.

Gradel bounced back in great fashion this season, after his sending off on the final day of last season, he proved to be an integral part of Leeds push at the top end of the table this season.

The 23 year old has also chipped in with seventeen goals so far this season, a tally only bettered by Luciano Becchio.

Jonny Howson picked up the Young Player of the Year award.

Howson captained the side for a large proportion of the season and he is the only Leeds player to have currently started all 45 Championship games this season.

The 22 year old who picked up his first England under 21 cap earlier this season also got amongst the goals.

Howson has chipped in with eleven goals so far this season including a fifteen-minute hat trick at Scunthorpe United.

Bradley Johnson picked up the goal of the season award for his 35-yard screamer, in the FA Cup replay at Elland Road against Arsenal.

His goal got Leeds back into the game after conceding twice in the opening thirty-five minutes.

Unfortunately, it proved in vain, as Arsenal scored again in the second half to secure a 3-1 win.

Personally I would have picked Becchio, a lot of people including me were questioning how we would manage to score the goals without Beckford and didn't think Becchio would step up to the mark in the Championship. He's proved more than an handful for defenders all season and the recent games without him have proven that we missed him. His goal scoring heroics after coming off the bench against Bristol City and then his late goals against Crystal Palace. His superb strike at Middlesbrough was up amongst the goals of the season. The first time he's hit 20 goals in a season as well. I think Gradel has had a good season but Becchio would have pipped him for me. Howson never really had any competititon for the young player of the season and anyone of about 20 goals could have got goal of the season, we have seen some crackers this season.

I cant say I disagree with any of the awards. Max has taken us all by surprise with his upturn in form after his idiotic behaviour against Bristol Rovers and his goal total is fantasic for a winger who missed the first four games of the season. If friendlies were counted his goal at ER against Wolves was also a cracker to match Bradley's against Arsenal. We didnt have any young players other than Johnny but had Lichaj been with us for a season long loan he would have taken some beating.

Shame we can't give the young player of the season to Tom Lees.
