LUFC Former Leeds youngster break record

Young 15 year old Barney Gibson has made history this week by becoming the youngest ever player to represent his county.

The former Leeds United Academy goalkeeper didn`t do it on the football pitch though.

Gibson decided to turn his hand (literally) to cricket and dedicated his time to the White Rose at Headingley as wicketkeeper.

As well as spending four years at Thorp Arch with the Leeds Academy, he also played for Yorkshire from an early age, starting at under 11`s.

Gibson went into the record books this week when he played in Yorkshire`s game with Durham MCC University at just 15 years and 27 days, which broke a record that as stood since 1867.

He broke the Yorkshire record that had been set by fast bowler Paul Jarvis in 1981, who made his debut for the white rose at just 16 years of age.

Gibson enjoyed a good start to the game with a good diving catch to his right to dismiss opener Luc Durandt.

The youngster took one more catch to help Yorkshire dismiss the University side for just 196.

The local Leeds lad follows fellow player Jonathan Bairstow, to have spent time at the Leeds Academy and go on to represent Yorkshire in first class cricket.

Good luck to him, we have a number of decent wicket keepers at Yorkshire with Brophy and also Bairstow behind the stumps. Having played there myself for most of last season it's a difficult position. You have to concentrate on every ball. God knows how players who kept wicket to some of the fastest bowlers in the world for days on end still have feelings in their hands.
