LUFC Reserves hit six to go top

Leeds United reserves kept up the pressure on Middlesbrough at the top of the Totesport.com East Division with a comprehensive 6-0 win over Hartlepool United at Elland Road.

Four goals from striker Ross McCormack gave Leeds boss Simon Grayson a nudge with fellow striker Billy Paynter missing the next three Championship games through suspension.

Leeds went into the break three goals to the good after strikes from Sanchez Watt, a first from McCormack and a fine free kick from Adam Clayton.

McCormack scored three more times in the second half to take his tally to ten goals in five games for the reserves.

Leeds have now scored sixteen goals in their last three reserve team fixtures.

The win moves Leeds above both opponents Hartlepool and Middlesbrough to go top of the division, although they have played a game more than Middlesbrough

Leeds welcome title rivals Middlesbrough to Elland Road next Wednesday and then face a trip to tonight`s opponents Hartlepool as they will hope to continue their pursuit of winning the league for the third successive season.

McCormack as given Grayson a little nudge with Paynter out. If he does get a chance lets hope he can take it. I think the Middlesbrough game on New Years Day must have really affected his confidence after missing about three sitters.

Difference in Reserves and 1st Team but like Paynter before him he needs a goal in the Championship

I have been critical of McCormack since he came but this was a first class performance. All his goals were good ones and his movement and link up play for others was top top class. HJe looks fitters as well. The whole team played well and the passing and movement from midfield with Clayton and young Nathan Turner was as good as we have seen in the first team all season. A word for Zak Thompson. He is only about 5' 9" but played like a giant at CH and instead of lumping the ball out like we did at Bramhall Lane on Saturday he passed it to the midfield.
