LUFC McCartney calls it a day

Leeds United on loan defender George McCartney has announced his retirement from international football.

The 29 year old announced his retirement to Northern Ireland boss Nigel Worthington on Sunday after being called up for the nations cup game with Scotland on Wednesday.

McCartney won 32 caps for Northern Ireland after making his debut against Iceland in a World Cup qualifier in September 2001.

The defender who is enjoying a successful loan spell with Leeds from Sunderland made his last appearance for Ireland in March 2010 against Albania.

Its a strange one, with Snodin the assistant to Worthington. you would have thought McCartney would have had a word with Snodin before his call up.

I have a feeling he DID have a word with Snodin and the call was more of an opportunity for HIM to retire with a bang - more of a testimonial than a genuine request to play - he hasn't been in the frame for a while and no player wants to be seen to fade away so this is a chance for him to say goodbye

A bit young to retire from International football, Ihope he knows what he's doing. Not having figured may have had something to do with it but its only recently he's hit top form.

He's had a bit of a falling out with Nigel Worthington since announcing his retirement.
