Kilkenny came off the bench to play the final eleven minutes of extra time in the final.

Australia had a number of chances to win the final with former Leeds midfielder Harry Kewell having a great chance to settle the final with eighteen minutes remaining of normal time.

Kewell was one on one with Eiji Kawashima in the Japan goal but the keeper stood tall to block Kewell`s effort.

Luke Wilshere also hit the bar and Tim Cahill had claims for a goal waved away after his effort was cleared off the line.

Tadanari Lee scored the only goal of the game with eleven minutes remaining to clinch the Championship for Japan with a volley after a ball in from the left.

Kilkenny finished the tournament making four substitute appearances for Australia.
