LUFC Walcott apologises for dive

Arsenal and England midfielder Theo Walcott issued a statement on the clubs official website apologising for trying to win a penalty by diving in the FA Cup clash with Leeds.

Phil Dowd turned down his appeals for a penalty although Walcott did win a legitimate penalty shortly afterwards when he was pulled back by Leeds defender Ben Parker.

The statement read:
'I want to apologise to the managers because I actually dived. I was trying to win the penalty. I said to one of their players 'would you have done it?' and he said he probably would have.

'I am not the sort of player to do it, but I own up to it and apologise. It is something I don't want to see in my game.
'I have heard some players say 'if there is a slight touch, go down' and it can work both ways.
'It was one of those things. I am not happy with myself for doing that, but I am happy that we got the draw.
'I had a little joke with the referee afterwards saying 'that was my first dive, can you tell?' I don't have to own up to it and I can't speak for other players, but I have just expressed how I feel. I hope people respect that.'

Cesc Fabregas converted the penalty in the final minute of normal time to earn the Gunners a replay at Elland Road after Robert Snodgrass had given Leeds the lead, also from the penalty spot.

Whether you agree with it or not its a rarity for someone to step up and say they dived especially when nothing was really made of the incident. Its something thats been in the game for years, Francis Lee was apparently one of the worst culprits for doing it and that goes back 40 years.

Big on him to admit it when nobody accused him. Francis Lee was an early exponent in winning dubious penaltis hence his (Chinese) nickname of Lee One Pen.

seen both "attempts" and I think both are shameless

Who wouldn't try get a penalty if you think you might get away with it...But in Walcott admitting he dived is not going to look well on his and Arsenal's CV...Maybe refs will be watching him in the future now...Dont think Wenger will be very happy with him admitting it...But he's a cheat!...What if that penalty had of lost Leeds the game I'd be calling him more then a cheat!...

I don't think we can have arguments about the second one, Parker definitely got hold of him. No need really as he would probably have wasted the chance.

Well done Theo, most teams have a few divers about and last minute decisions difficult to make. Before anone gets on their high horse about this take a look at Becchio, he's prone to throwing himself about.
Only-Sleggin
Becchio, throwing himself to the ground, never!

Sad indictment of the state of the game. There is far more diving and rolling around playing dead in the Prem than in the Football League. Money, bigger prizes, pressure...whatever, we may have to recruit Tom Daley if we do get up next year!

Didn't think the tug by Parker was much of one after seeing it on T V Walcott got the shot away. But it was in front of there fans would it have been different if it had happened at our end???
