LUFC Memory Match; Leeds 2-0 Swansea 22/9/2007

Leeds United 2-0 Swansea City League One 22nd September 2007
Beckford 62
Prutton 67 Attendance: 29,467

In our latest look at clash between Leeds and Saturday`s opponents, we make the short memory trip back to 2007 when Leeds United were fighting against all odds to overturn the 15 point penalty they had received before the season had even started.

Going into the game Leeds had already managed to overturn their point`s penalty, having won their opening six games and were one place above the relegation zone in twentieth place.

Swansea, who would eventually go up as champions, had made a steady start and were in mid table.

Once again, the Leeds fans were out in numbers and almost 30,000 fans were present for the clash.

Leeds started the better; Prutton had a good chance but failed to make contact with the ball when getting into a good position in front of goal.

Tresor Kandol had started the season in fine fashion scoring five goals in the opening six games and he went close to adding to that tally when his shot clipped the post and went wide.

The chances were few and far between though with two solid defences snuffing out the attacking threats of both sides.

Leeds almost broke the deadlock in the opening minutes of the second half when De Vries in the Swansea goal tipped over a fierce shot from Jermaine Beckford.

Leeds finally broke through just past the hour when Beckford scored his sixth goal in seven games.
Seb Carole played a free kick into Beckford, who flicked the ball up with his right foot, before drilling a left foot shot through a crowded penalty area to open the scoring.
The game was all over five minutes later when the ball fell to David Prutton 25 yards out and his low shot found it`s way past De Vries to make it 2-0.

The win made it seven wins from seven for Leeds from the start of the season and equalised a club record.

Swansea did eventually go up as champions with 92 points and Leeds would have joined the in second place on 91 points if not for the 15-point penalty.

Leeds form dipped in the second half of the season and they eventually finished in fifth place before losing the Play off final 1-0 against Doncaster Rovers.

I loved the start to that season, the us against them mentality. All went down hill when Poyet left.

Cant wait for the Donny game we owe them one! I'm not sure if it's getting Televised hope so...And about Poyet wish he'd have taken over when Wise jumped ship...

Still cant believe we dropped the momentum - even with Poyet leaving, the field personell stayed the same - sadly the results didn't (with the loss to Oldham being my personal rock bottom - how the hell did that happen ??)

Our form had started to dip before Poyet left. Even Pruts conceded Poyet had little influence in training or tactics as Wise dominated all aspects of match day

What makes it worse was we did the hard work by actually going top over christmas and then we really did start to fall away badly. I thought we wasn't going to make even the play offs at one stage. Dougie Freedman proved an inspired signing by McAllister but then we just didn't turn up (again) in a Play off final.
