New signing Billy Paynter got his first goal for the club on Friday night in the sides second friendly of the season and he is determined to be in the starting line up on the opening day against Derby County.
Paynter scored the only goal of the game in Leeds second pre season friendly of the season against MFK Kosice in Slovakia on Friday night as the side recorded their first win of pre season.
The striker who signed for Leeds in the summer told the Yorkshire Evening Post, "There's a battle on for places - a friendly competition. I want to make sure that I give the gaffer something to think about at the start of the season.
'The aim has to be to make it impossible for him to leave me out. I knew when I came here that I wasn't guaranteed a place, that I'd have to work hard for it and show him that I do deserve to be in the team."
The 25 year old scored 29 goals for Swindon Town last season, including four against Leeds and took only ten minutes of his second appearance to see a sweetly struck volley nestling in the back of the net.
With Jermaine Beckford leaving in the summer, there is fresh competition for places in the striker department, Paynter along with Mike Grella and Luciano Becchio all fighting for a starting place on the opening day against Derby.
Fellow strikers David Somma and Max Gradel will both miss the opening three and four games of the season respectively after being sent off on the final day of the season.
