LUFC Paynter off the mark in Leeds win

Leeds United finished off their tour of Slovakia with a 1-0 win against MFK Kosice.

Leeds won thanks to a first goal for the club by summer signing Billy Paynter.

Once again, boss Simon Grayson used the game to try to give his players minutes on the pitch with five substitutions at half time.

After losing their first game on Tuesday Leeds were out to make amends, Robert Snodgrass was the first to test the Kosice goalkeeper.

Somma had a good chance to give Leeds shortly afterwards but his header cleared the bar.

Leeds had enjoyed the majority of the attacking play during the first half but couldn`t find a goal that their play deserved.

Leeds continued in the same vain in the second half with substitute Paynter testing the Kosice keeper before seeing his cross cleared with Grella waiting to pounce.

It wasn`t long before Leeds did take the lead, Billy Paynter got on the end of a Bradley Johnson flick and he gave the keeper no chance with his volley.

Robert Snodgrass should have sealed the win with fifteen minutes remaining from the penalty spot after a foul on Grella but his spot kick was saved.

Leeds couldn`t find a second goal to clinch the game, Max Gradel and Billy Paynter both having chances to double the lead.

A much better display by Leeds and a merited victory in Slovakia which ends their week long tour of the country.

Leeds now head back to Britain and get ready for their first pre season friendly on home soil when they travel to Bury on Tuesday night.

Team:
Higgs (Schmeichel 46), Connolly (Hughes 46), Collins, Bromby (Lees 74), Bessone (White 46), Snodgrass, Kilkenny, Howson (Gradel 60), Johnson, Becchio (Grella 46), Somma (Paynter 46).

Sounds like we played well and deserved the win. Great to see Paynter off the mark, it will only help his confidence at his new club.

glad paynter has got off the mark. be nice to see Somma do the same on Tuesday night! I think it's important the strikers come into the season in good form and confident if Larry's going to stick with what we've got?

Great to get a win and Paynter get off the mark. Now to get a few more wins and goals before the kick off against Derby.
