LUFC Season review - September

We continue with our monthly review of last season, we now move into September and Leeds continue to enjoy a great start to the season.

Leeds went into the month on the back of seven straight wins in all competitions during August.

The first of the month saw the final day of the transfer window. Leigh Bromby joins Leeds from Sheffield United for a figure reported to be around £250,000.

Davide Somma who had been enjoying a successful trial during the summer signed a one-year contract with the club.

Tom Lees and Alan Sheehan both go out on loan, Lees joins Accrington on a one-month loan deal and Sheehan joins Oldham Athletic also for one month.

Leeds clash with Liverpool in the Carling Cup later in the month, is chosen by Sky TV has their live game in the third round.

Leeds continue their great start to the season with a 2-0 home victory over Stockport County thanks to goals from Mike Grella and Lubomir Michalik who both make rare starts.

The side enter the history books with two separate records with the win, the win is their fourteenth home win in a row and also eight straight wins at the start of the season.

The draw for the second round of the Johnstone`s Paint Trophy takes place, Darlington will once again be opposition in the cup for Leeds this season having recently met in the Carling Cup at the Reynolds Arena.

This time the two clubs will clash at Elland Road in October.

Simon Grayson is nominated for the manager of the month award for August, but not for the only time in the season, he is overlooked despite seven wins out of seven in the month.

Jermaine Beckford is also in the running for the League One player of the month after five goals in five games but he is also overlooked when the winner is announced.

Defender Paul Huntington joins Stockport County on loan for a month with first team opportunities limited at Elland Road.

Leeds drop their first points of the season when they are held to a 0-0 draw at Southend. It could have been worse; Shane Higgs earned Leeds a point late on when he saved a Lee Barnard penalty.

Another player goes out on loan, this time striker Tom Elliott joins League Two Bury for three months.

Leeds get back to winning ways with a 4-1 victory over Gillingham at Elland Road. Bradley Johnson continues his impressive goalscoring start to the season with another two goals, Jon Howson`s first goal of the season and another one for Jermaine Beckford ensure an easy afternoon for the whites.

Leeds lose a close encounter against Premiership side Liverpool in the Carling Cup at Elland Road 1-0 in front of over 38,000 fans.

A goal by David N`Gog is enough for Liverpool halfway through the second half.

Leeds were unlucky not to already be one up after Jermaine Beckford`s goal was harshly ruled out for offside in the first half.

Robert Snodgrass scores the only goal of the game when Leeds return to league action on the Saturday at MK Dons.

Snodgrass struck deep into injury time to ensure Leeds kept up their fantastic start to the season.

The only sour note of the game is an injury to goalkeeper Shane Higgs who suffers a thigh injury that is to ruin a large part of his season.

Leeds are quick to bring in a replacement as cover for Casper Ankergren, Frank Fielding joins from Blackburn Rovers for a month.

Tom Lees who has enjoyed a month on loan at Accrington Stanley extends his stay until January.

Elland Road Bogey side Carlisle United end Leeds fifteen game winning run when they earn a point in a 1-1 draw.

Carlisle were the last side to stop Leeds winning at Elland Road back in January when they won 2-0.

Leeds took the lead on the half hour thanks to Jermaine Beckford who reacted quickest after seeing his penalty saved initially.

Scott Dobie came off the bench for the Cumbria side and scored within three minutes to earn them a point with fifteen minutes remaining.

Despite the draw, Leeds finish the month still unbeaten in League One with twenty-six points from ten games and have a three point lead over nearest rivals Charlton Athletic who are next up for Leeds United on the first Saturday in October.

Next week we will be looking back at October when Leeds suffer their first defeat of the season in the league, but still continue to set the pace.

Another great month, its so nice looking back on this now after winning promotion this last season. Bradley Johnson was looking outstanding throughout this month and was the find of the season for Leeds so far after a mediocre season the season before.

Everything was looking rosy by this time and our (the supporters) confidence was soaring. I did the Liverpool match in the east stand upper (for old times sake) amongst the Strongbow warriers who probably hadnt been there since we last played Liverpool. Glad toi get back to the west for the next game.
