LUFC Looking forward to June

June is the month that will get the football juices running ahead of the 2010/11 season.

It`s hard to believe that it`s only been a month since the last season finished but we can really start to look forward to next season during the course of this month.

The 2010 FIFA World Cup starts in South Africa in just over a week`s time and we can expect the usual performance by England where we all get excited before losing to someone on penalties around the quarter finals stage.

What`s more important is that it is also the month that the fixtures for the 2010/11 season are issued.

The Championship for next season was completed at the weekend when Millwall joined Norwich and Leeds in going up from League One.

Also going into the Championship next season are Portsmouth, Burnley and Hull City who were all relegated from the Premier League.

Next season looks like being another excitable division with six sides from the Yorkshire and Humberside region making up 25 per cent of the division.

There are also roses matches to look forward to against Preston and Burnley as well as a trip to the North East to face Middlesbrough.

There are also the relatively short trips to the midlands, to look forward to games against Leicester, Coventry, Derby and Nottingham Forest.

Crystal Palace, Millwall, Watford and QPR means there will be four trips to the capital.

The fixtures will be released on Thursday June 17th at 10am so the planning for next season can start.

The first game of the season will take place over the weekend of August 7th.

The new season will have new sponsors with NPower taking over from Coca Cola and it will be known as the NPower Championship.

The Christmas period is going to be very busy with games on December 26th and 28th as well as New Year games on the 1st and 3rd.

Leeds will return to joining the FA Cup at the third round stage after entering at the first round stage for the last three seasons, the third round will take place over the weekend of January 8th.

Leeds progressed to the fourth round last season and earned worldwide recognition after knocking out Man United at Old Trafford in the third round.

They then held Tottenham to a draw at White Hart Lane in the next round before losing the replay at Elland Road.


The final weekend of the season will be played over the weekend of May 11th.

Prior to this, the first round of the Carling Cup is drawn on Wednesday 16th June and will be announced at 9.30am.

70 sides from the Football League will join in at the first round stage with only Hull City and Burnley not joining in until the second round.

The first round draw will be regionalised and seeded.

Leeds enjoyed success in the first two rounds last season before narrowly losing out to Liverpool 1-0 in the third round.

The first round ties will take place in the week commencing 9th August.
