LUFC Grayson - Players needed a rest

Leeds United boss Simon Grayson was delighted with the display of his much-changed side at Oldham Athletic on Tuesday night and explained that some of his squad needed a rest.

The Whites eased to a 2-0 win even though they made a number of changes including Jermaine Beckford and Robert Snodgrass only starting from the bench.

Speaking on the official website Grayson said "We have nine games in a month, we have had four in ten days and players need a rest".

David Prutton made his first start for Leeds in almost a year and on loan midfielder Hogan Ephraim made his first start for the club.

Ephraim became the twenty ninth player used by Grayson this season and it shows the strength in depth Leeds have when Mike Doyle, Tresor Kandol and Andy Robinson don`t even make the squad.

Oldham wasted a couple of good chances early on before Leeds started to dominate the game, Neil Kilkenny opened the scoring just past the half hour and then Luciano Becchio came off the bench late on to clinch the points.

Was a bit worried before the kick off but the players who came in and did well, think it will be back to the usual eleven for Huddersfield on Saturday.

Can't believe how many players we have used this season, I think the players needing a rest was why Grayson brought in the loan players last week. We have a very busy month and if we can go through this month unbeaten we will be in a fantastic position on New Years Day.

Is this the new SG or just a passing experiemnt ??? He has always been keen to field his strongest teams in almost all competitions. Maybe a Tuesday game preceded by a Sunday afternoon game was too much for hm. I expect to see Kisnorbo, Beckford and Doyle back for saturday with a good chance of Becchio starting given his impact last night. He can always bring him off after an hour.

As a statement of intent to the rest of the league it was a pretty powerful message, we have the squad to cover all positions and can rest players as well when we need to. There will be no need to rush players back from injury and there are no other teams in League one with our depth of squad.

I think after playing Oldham only a few weeks ago he knew he could rest a few and still manage three points. I wonder how well it would have gone down had we lost?
